Professional Year In Engineering


The Professional Year in Engineering is a 44-week ‘job-preparedness’ program aimed at equipping participants with the professional skills needed for a successful career in the Australian Engineering workforce; in turn helping to address the engineering skills shortage in Australia.

Designed to enhance the participant’s ability to obtain employment in their chosen engineering discipline through practical training and workshops in areas such as communication, as well as access to learning and career development tools and methods, the program includes an invaluable minimum 12 weeks full-time
or 20 week part-time (unpaid) supervised engineering intern placement with a host company.

Participant Eligibility

There are two Engineering streams eligible for the Professional Year in Engineering Program.

  • Skilled-Graduate (Temporary)visa (subclass 485)
    • have graduated from an Australian University course of at least two years duration, closely related to engineering
    • have applied for or hold a valid Skilled-Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 485) , and nominated an occupational classification in Engineering
    • hold a successful Migration Skills Assessment from Engineers Australia, and meet other entry criteria as set by Engineering Education Australia and available on application.


  • Skilled-Recognised Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 476) Currently only available to overseas Engineering graduates, participants must have:
    • completed an eligible Engineering Degree at a recognised overseas university*
    • hold a valid Skilled- Recognised Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 476), and
    • meet other entry criteria as set by Engineering Education Australia and available on application.

As a professional program approved by DIAC, successful completion of the Professional Year in Engineering may attract an additional 5 points under the skilled migration points test.
