Top 3 Tips to Ace Your First Interview

 003-Interviewtips

Interviews are daunting whether or not it’s your first time. It’s normal to be nervous but there are things you can do that will help you be better prepared and allow you to put your best foot forward.

1. Bring your resume

Even if your resume is simple and basic, this is an important tool in the job searching process. Your resume allows your employer to have an understanding of your skills and work experience (voluntary work also counts). It also makes you appear prepared and organised.

2. Dress smart

The way you dress may vary depending on the job, for example you may want to dress trendier if applying with a fashion clothes store. However dressing smart and neat is always essential. First impressions are critical and you want to look professional and responsible. When in doubt, a plain button up shirt, trousers and black shoes are sufficient.

3. Know why you want the job

The employer may or may not ask you this directly but always have your answer ready. Often they may ask “tell me a little about yourself.” This is a great opportunity to throw in your answer. You can mention your school, your favourite subject and finish with “I’m applying for this job because…” Your reason can be as simple as I want to earn extra pocket money and to gain work experience, or I enjoy meeting new people and I think I would be great at customer service.

If you feel that you have messed up your interview, don’t worry too much about it. Practice makes perfect and the more interviews you go to, the better you will get at it. After each interview think about what you would do differently next time. You will see that each time you do this; you become more experienced and comfortable at it. Learning how to interview well is an amazing skill that will benefit you in your future career.
