 Unit Overview:

The most visible aspect of public relations is the writing and dissemination of messages to a diverse range of internal and external audiences of an organisation. Messages are communicated in a variety of formats to multiple media channels and platforms. Following prior research and planning to formulate the objectives and strategy of a public relations campaign, writers and media placement specialists are responsible for the tactical implementation of the campaign, i.e. ‘making it happen’. They are the ‘production’ staff who write the news releases, formulate the stories for release on social media and contact the television show producer to make a ‘pitch’ for the company’s spokesperson to appear as a guest to talk about the product.

This unit places a particular emphasis on helping students to develop strong, persuasive writing skills. It will cover media relations techniques such as media kits, fact sheets and backgrounders. It will also include speech writing, preparation of newsletters and brochures, web page content and social media techniques.
