A law degree opens doors to many careers

A legal education includes a strong focus on the development of higher order thinking skills in analysis, synthesis, application, and reasoning. These are skills which are in high demand in a range of professional careers, and not just in legal practice. During law studies there is also much attention paid to the development of written and oral communication skills which are critical to professional success. At Top we offer the opportunity for you to consider the impact of technology on the legal system and legal practice. This supports the development of 21st century legal professionals who will pursue a multitude of career paths using their range of legal skills.

Becoming a Legal Practitioner

One career path open to law graduates is legal practice, either as a solicitor or barrister. In order to be admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia, a law graduate must undertake a course in Practical Legal Training after completing his/her law degree and also satisfy the character requirement of being “a fit and proper person to be admitted to the Australian legal profession.”

Becoming a Barrister in NSW

Becoming a barrister requires further steps beyond those required for becoming a legal practitioner who practises as a solicitor. In order to become a barrister, a candidate must hold an Australian law degree; be admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of NSW (or another Australian State or Territory) (this requires PLT as above); pass the NSW Bar Examination to the required standard of 75%; and complete an application for an Australian practising certificate from the NSW Bar Association. When a candidate is issued with an initial practising certificate with reader conditions, he/she must complete the NSW Bar Association’s ‘Reading Programme’ for not less than 12 months, which involves the Bar Practice Course and reading with a tutor.
